AD | I recently received this children’s book What’s going on? for the purpose of a review.

The story has been written by three Mothers, Donna Claire, Tamar Henry and Eleni Davis. What’s Going On? (asked Belinda Fitz-John) Is a children’s story written to help explain the current circumstances of the Covid19 pandemic and the lockdown we are currently experiencing.

What’s Going On? is a great story which follows a young girl named Belinda Fitz-John. She is like most children at the moment, confused about what is currently going on around us with the covid19 pandemic. Asking questions like… Why do we have to stay inside.

Belinda looking out of the Window

As you can see from the image above taken from What’s Going On? Belinda looks out of her window and cannot see her grandparents or her friends at the park. Something that must be very hard and difficult for most children to deal with. Not seeing the normal as they would usually be able to see it. It is something my own children have also asked on more than one occasion. In What’s Going on? She asks why the man she can see is wearing a mask. This is because of Social-Isolation to protect the nation and keep us all safe by reducing the risk of catching the virus if they are a person who needs to leave their home. Such as key workers, it is extra protection for them.

The story includes very inviting and eye caching illustrations along with friendly rhyming words. It has been written so it is easier for younger children to understand. I must have read What’s going on? with pig my 4yr old daughter at least a dozen times. Each time we seem to read What’s Going On? A question she may have had about the virus has been answered and she is content and happy. Pig has found this story especially useful with how she relates to Belinda’s character and not being able to attend her nursery or how she is unable to see her friends and members of our family. Especially her grandparents.

My daughter pig asking a similar question to Belinda in the story What's Going On?
Pig asking similar quiestion of why we cannot see certain family members or friends.

This story has emphasised the importance of taking care of ourselves, not just for our safety but for others around us also. The washing of our hands and making sure that hygeine is important, for example coughing and sneezing into our elbow and not into our hand, or even those who don’t cover their mouth at all. Not easy sometimes for some young children to remember.

My older daughters Mouse and Titch are at an age where they understand better than Pig and Beast. Thanks to Whats Going On? they understand the virus a little better and the reasons behind why we must be in lockdown.

Understanding the circumstances a bit better thanks to the story What's Going On?

Lockdown hasn’t been easy for alot of families and people in general really. Very surreal times. I’ve tried to take a few positives from the lockdown situation. Here are a few of my positives from lockdown.

I don’t think it is Co-parenting as such as we don’t share 50/50 custody. My eldest daughter is at her mums house throughout the week and with us at the weekends. But here is a post I wrote about Co-parenting during Covid19.
